about
Aliza Katzman is a painter and printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. Born (1998) and raised in the CA Bay Area, Aliza is a nonbinary artist whose queer identity and mixed cultural upbringing (Ashkenazi Jewish, Korean, and Irish) influences their interest in social cohesion and taxonomy.
They are interested in (un)familiarity, ambiguity, and the absurd. When prior understandings become inapplicable in certain spaces, or the familiar is otherwise distorted, one could be both liberated and unsettled. Similarly, spaces where boundaries are transgressed can encompass both intimacy and violence. Envisioning such fantastical spaces is a drawn-out meditation on the ways we reconcile our selves to our surroundings.
Their current work investigates inherited narratives, personal mythologies, and intersections between intimacy and ecology.
On the daily, Aliza is driven by a love of food, friends, family, and any combination of fresh air and open water.
